Macro Prints (2015)

Peles Empire create, among other things, large scale wall coverings with images that are distorted so that they appear to flow, in the same way as the SSTV images I created. The idea was that by enlarging the images to such a scale, it forced the viewer to interpret it differently to something of a more natural size. The intention being to create a struggle in viewing, in the same way that it is a struggle to recall a memory.

I decided to instead shrink the images I had created with the SSTV protocol. As these images were by their nature very small anyway. I effectively printed them such that each ink jet represented one pixel, which resulted in extremely small printed images. These images, I found had the same effect on the viewer as large images, by creating a struggle to understand the image.

I documented the size of these images using an improvised macro lens. This granted an extremely narrow depth of field and extremely close focus depth, so I lit the prints from the back. The intriguing thing about these images to me is the blur. From stark contrasts in colour towards the center to silky fades at the edges. I also experimented with macro photography on screens and handwritten word.
